The Secret of Success - A top 5 list of successful character traits - Self Confidence
Greetings from balmy Nebraska where the temp today is in the upper 60’s. I’ve been sitting out on the deck soaking up the sun and thinking about poor Doug up in Canada shoveling that foot of new snow.
But this is Nebraska and the forecast for the weekend is.. yep, SNOW! You gotta love March snow! .. unless you’re shoveling it, right Doug?
It’s been a great couple of weeks here in the jungle.. My thanks, as always, to Doug who does a super job of keeping things running smoothly. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without him!
There are still plans being made for a referral contest coming soon. I’m running just a little behind due to a 10 day stay at the Omaha hospital with my son Luke. Many of you that have been with HS from the start know that he had a kidney transplant in 2003 which failed within the first year. He is now healthy enough to undergo a second transplant and needed some preliminary surgery which is why we were in Omaha.
We got back home this last Saturday, much to the delight of my pug, Charlie, who nearly had a coronary when she saw me.
Luke is recovering well and we are waiting for further confirmation on his upcoming transplant.
Today’s news contains Chapter 2 of the top 5 list of successful character traits as well as the 50 on 5 results.

The Secret of Success
A top 5 list of successful character traits
chapter two -
Samuel Johnson stated that “Self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings.” Believing this to be true is why it holds a place on my top 5 list of Successful character traits.
Self-confidence is defined as the realistic belief in one’s own judgment, ability or power.
A realistic belief in yourself.. who you are and what you can do.
We all know people who believe in themselves.. many times we look up to them.. admire them.. wish we could be more like them. The truth is, everyone can project self confidence. It is a trait that can be developed.
To develop self confidence it’s important to understand first what causes us to NOT have it.
What causes our belief in ourselves to waver?
Any answer that you are coming up with will very likely have fear at it’s core. Fear is the one thing that will most quickly make any confidence you have run for the shadows.
Are you afraid
… of looking stupid?
… that people will laugh?
… that you will fail?
Whatever your fears are, they need to be identified and dealt with.. confronted head on.
Fear is a disease and when left unchecked can affect every area of our lives. We already control fear to a certain extent or we’d all be living in institutions. Our purpose here is to identify the lesser fears that are keeping us from reaching our full potential.
Fear falls under the same heading as positive thinking.. as we think, so we are. If we focus on our fears they will come to pass. How many of us have come into a situation afraid that something would happen.. and sure enough, it did. Could it be that we tripped up the stairs to the stage in front of the whole audience because that was the only thing we could picture ourself doing? (illustration chosen purely at random.. names have been omitted to protect the innocent)
Standing our ground against our fears is what breeds self confidence and the longer we stand our ground, the less control our fears will have over us.
Standing our ground involves doing the very thing that scares us the most. Identify what it is that you fear.. what makes you afraid of looking stupid, or being laughed at and then go do it. Each time that you take a stand by confronting your fear head on, your self confidence tank will begin to fill. Eventually not only will people perceive you as confident, you’ll believe it yourself because it’s true!
Does that imply that we should never feel fear? Not at all. When asked, most stage actors will tell you that they are terrified before each performance but they look at it as a good thing. Without that, they say, they would lose their edge. Each time they go on stage they confront that fear and take away it’s control by stepping out into the lights.
The world generally accepts a person at their own value. If you give the impression that you are afraid, that is how people will perceive you and more importantly, treat you, imposing on you or flat out ignoring you. But when a person stands up boldly and self-confidently they are allowed the freedom of expression that in turn demands the respect that a successful person deserves.
“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals
the human spirit.”
~ E. E. Cummings
Such is the power of self confidence; such is the secret of success.
