The immature mind hops from one thing to another;
the mature mind seeks to follow through.

~ Harry A. Overstreet

The single most important asset that you can have as a Internet Marketer, or in any area of life, is…

–noun

1. a central point, as of attraction, attention, or activity

The biggest single asset that new, and many that have been around for awhile, Internet Marketers lack is…

fo·cus
–noun

1. a central point, as of attraction, attention, or activity

Focus, a clear understanding of where you are going, gives you a purpose, a reason for doing the things that you do. Each of your actions has meaning and leads you towards an ultimate goal.

Imagine driving cross country without a map.. could you do it? Sure. But say you were going to Far Hills, New Jersey, on the East coast from Californina, on the West coast, and you needed to be there within a week, and.. you had to do it without a map.

You’d make it to the East coast eventually, but the chances of arriving in Far Hills, New Jersey are very small.

But if you had a map.. and focused on it, you could drive right up main street Far Hills, New Jersey well within your time limit.

Your goal is Far Hills, New Jersey within a week.. your focus, or central point of attention, is the map.

By maintaining your focus, you won’t get sidetracked by the billboard that advertises -
the largest honey bee hive in the world : 22 miles —>>
or the sign that points to the countries biggest prairie dog habitat.

Certainly, honey bees and prarie dogs may be a major interst of yours.. or they may be something that you’ve always wanted to learn about, or maybe you’ve heard that there is money in honey.. but neither of those detours will help you achieve your ultimate goal of Far Hills, New Jersey.. In fact any detour will more then likely keep you from ever reaching Far Hills, New Jersey, especially by the specified time.

Focus is dependent on having goals.. something to work towards. And the goals MUST be specific.

Making a lot of money is NOT a specific goal.. earning 100,000 dollars a year from your Internet marketing business within 3 years IS a specific goal. First and foremost, you need to WRITE DOWN specific goals and then you’ll be able to draw up your map to get you there. Your plan.. your central point of attention.. your FOCUS.

Many of you know that I usually get my ideas for what to write from personal experience.. this week is no different. I have recently set a new goal in my life and in doing so have changed my focus drastically.

While my new goal has nothing to do with my Internet marketing business, the lessons are universal.

Last Friday I took my 3 year old granddaughter to the doctor for her regular checkup. While there I decided to have my blood pressure checked, since it had been awhile. The nurses face showed immediate concern as I asked what it was. She paged the doctor who, when he came in, said that I was a stroke waiting to happen. He immediately administered some drugs and made me 2 more appointments.

When his nurse asked me if I wanted to see my grandchildren grow up, I had a new major goal in life along with a new focus.

There are many things that affect blood pressure.. diet, weight, level of fitness to name 3. I knew that each of those areas needed to be addressed and that they were also things I’d wanted to accomplish but hadn’t done anything about but as I began reading when I got home, I quickly became confused.

Do you know how many weight loss diets there are? Do you have any idea how many ‘fit for life’ diets there are? How about exercise programs… dozens! And to make matters worse, many of them contradict each other.. high fat, low carbs.. hi carbs for energy, low fat.. drink this tea, lose this many pounds.. and the list goes on and on and applies to fitness diets as well as exercise programs. How do I balance what this says against what that says. Can it even be done?

Then I realized that my focus was all wrong.. I didn’t need to lose weight, eat better or exercise more. What I needed to do was LOWER MY BLOOD PRESSURE. Ahhhh, now everything began to fall into place.

What do I need to do to lower my blood pressure.. avoid salt, eat more fruits and vegetables, cut back on caffeine, lower my fat intake, incoporate at least 20 minutes of areobic exercise (walking) into each day. These things makes sense.. these things I can do without having a major brain meltdown.

Now here is the interesting part.. while I pursue the goal of lowering my blood pressure, by focusing on the specific things that will do that, will I lose weight?
YES

While I pursue the goal of lowering my blood pressure, by focusing on the specific things that will do that, will I begin eating better quality foods?
YES

While I pursue my goal by focusing on specific things, will I become more physically fit?
YES

Am I driving myself crazy trying to keep up with several different plans.. doing nothing well because I don’t have the time to research each subject I need to know about.. feeling like a failure because all my plans don’t mesh together like I think they should, bringing me the results that I want?
NO

Just the opposite.. I am achieving everything I want by focusing on specific things that will make sure I reach my major goal of lowering my blood pressure.

Ok.. let’s pull all these strings together and tie up this package.

**First.. do you have a major goal thought out and written down for your Internet marketing business?
Do you know where you’re going?

**Second.. do you know what you need to do to accomplish that major goal?
What route are you going to take to get there?

**Third.. have you written those things down?
Do you have a map telling you exactly how to get to where you’re going?

**Fourth.. are you focused, not allowing yourself to be distracted by other programs and claims of riches?
Are you focusing on your map, not being distracted by billboards and roadsigns now matter how tempting?

.. and the single most important thing needed to achieve our goals.

“One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.”
~ Anthony Robbins
